Thinking at Carlswald House Preparatory

Our goal at CHP is to produce lifelong, passionate and imaginative thinkers who are able to  problem-solve effectively and therefore perform better. The thinking programme at CHP is developed alongside the CAPS curriculum to help children to think critically and to work collaboratively. It also encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning across the curriculum and improves children’s engagement.

The way in which we do this is through making thinking visible using the 8 Thinking Maps. Higher Order Thinking and Questioning is a part of daily life and specific critical thinking lessons are taught. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) rounds off the Senior Prep curriculum where the children learn through problem solving. Habits of Mind is currently used in the higher grades of the school and will be introduced across the whole school in 2018 as well as DeBono’s Thinking Hats in 2019.

What have we been up to?

In Grade 4 & 5 we created our own Charities for endangered animals. As part of our project we had to conduct an interview.

Here is one of the groups. We filmed it ourselves on the iPads.
